How to Prepare for Your Electrolysis Appointment: Everything You Need to Know

So, you've booked your electrolysis appointment. You're officially one step closer to saying goodbye to unwanted hair!

Whether it's your very first treatment or you're already on your permanent hair removal journey, a little preparation can make a big difference.

At Trophy Wife Electrolysis, we want you to feel comfortable, confident, and ready for your appointment. Here's everything you need to know before settling into our heated treatment bed.

1. Let Your Hair Grow (Just a Little!)

We know, growing out unwanted hair when you're trying to get rid of it sounds a little backwards!

But electrolysis requires enough visible hair for your electrologist to identify the follicle and gently remove the treated hair with tweezers.

How long should your hair be before electrolysis?

Ideally, your hair should be long enough to easily grasp with tweezers, usually around 2–3 mm.

For many people, this means allowing approximately 3–5 days of growth, although this varies depending on the area and how quickly your hair grows.

If you can avoid shaving entirely between appointments, even better! This allows us to see your natural hair growth patterns and identify hairs as they become available for treatment.

You don't need to arrive with excessively long hair. Just enough for us to work with!

2. Put Down the Tweezers!

This is one of the most important steps when preparing for permanent hair removal.

Avoid any hair removal method that pulls hair out from the root, including:

  • Tweezing or plucking

  • Waxing

  • Threading

  • Sugaring

  • Epilating

Electrolysis treats individual hair follicles, and we need visible hair to locate and treat them.

Removing hair from the root means waiting for that hair to become visible again before it can be treated.

Can you shave between electrolysis appointments?

Yes! Shaving and trimming are allowed because they leave the follicle intact.

However, avoiding shaving whenever possible is preferred, as it helps us monitor your natural growth patterns and treatment progress.

If you do shave, allow enough regrowth before your next appointment for the hairs to be easily grasped with tweezers.

3. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

Here's your excuse to keep that water bottle close!

Well-hydrated skin is important for electrolysis, particularly because some electrolysis methods rely on moisture within the follicle to help conduct electrical current.

Proper hydration may also help support skin comfort during treatment.

Try to drink water regularly in the days leading up to your appointment rather than trying to make up for it all at once.

4. Keep Your Skin Moisturized

Healthy, well-moisturized skin makes for a happier treatment experience.

In the days before your appointment, continue using a gentle moisturizer suitable for your skin type.

Dry or irritated skin can make treatment less comfortable, so a little extra attention to your skincare routine goes a long way.

On appointment day, please arrive with clean skin free from heavy lotions, oils, and makeup in the treatment area.

If you're receiving facial electrolysis, removing makeup beforehand helps us get started without using your appointment time for cleansing.

5. Give Your Skin a Break From Harsh Products

If you regularly use strong skincare ingredients, your skin may be more sensitive during electrolysis.

Products to be mindful of include:

  • Retinol and retinoids

  • Glycolic acid

  • Salicylic acid

  • Strong exfoliating products

  • Chemical peels

Depending on the product and your skin, you may need to pause certain active ingredients before treatment.

If you use prescription skincare, check with your prescribing healthcare professional before making changes.

Avoid aggressive exfoliation or trying new skincare treatments immediately before your appointment.

6. Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure and Irritation

Sunburned or irritated skin isn't ideal for electrolysis.

Avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure before your treatment, and let us know if you have a sunburn, rash, broken skin, or irritation in the area you'd like treated.

Treatment may need to be postponed until your skin has recovered.

Continue protecting your skin from the sun. If you've applied sunscreen, please gently cleanse it from the treatment area before arriving.

7. Go Easy on Caffeine and Alcohol

Excessive caffeine may make some people feel more sensitive or restless during treatment, while alcohol can contribute to dehydration.

Keeping both to a minimum before your appointment may help you feel more comfortable.

8. Eat Something and Get Comfortable

Electrolysis appointments can range from short touch-ups to longer treatment sessions.

Having a meal or snack beforehand may help you feel more comfortable, especially during longer appointments.

Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated.

And don't worry about getting comfortable. At Trophy Wife Electrolysis, you'll be relaxing on a heated treatment bed while we work on those unwanted hairs.

A little luxury never hurts!

9. Let's Talk About Numbing Cream!

Worried about discomfort during electrolysis? You're not alone, and you have options!

Everyone experiences electrolysis a little differently. Some areas are more sensitive than others, and everyone's comfort level is unique.

That's where topical numbing creams may come in!

Certain topical anesthetic creams can temporarily reduce skin sensation, making treatment more comfortable for some clients, particularly when working on sensitive areas or during longer appointments.

Comfort is a priority at Trophy Wife Electrolysis.

We want your experience to be as comfortable and relaxing as possible, and we're always happy to discuss ways to make your appointment easier.

Can I Apply Numbing Cream Before My Appointment?

Potentially, yes! However, it's important to choose the right product and use it correctly.

Different numbing creams have different active ingredients, application instructions, and safety precautions.

Applying too much, using them over large areas, covering them improperly, or leaving them on longer than directed can cause serious side effects.

Please reach out before your appointment if you're interested in using numbing cream. We can discuss your treatment area, what to ask your pharmacist, and how to prepare safely.

Always follow the product's instructions and seek advice from a pharmacist or healthcare professional when selecting a topical anesthetic.

Whether you prefer to use a numbing cream or go without, we'll work together to make your treatment experience as comfortable as possible.

10. Let Us Know About Skin Conditions, Medications or Recent Treatments

Your safety and comfort come first.

Before your appointment, please let us know about any relevant medical conditions, medications, skin sensitivities, recent cosmetic procedures, or changes to your health.

Certain conditions or treatments may require additional precautions, modifications, or postponing electrolysis.

If you're unsure whether something matters, it's always better to ask!
